Andrea Marmol

I use the human body to convey and explore human emotions. I hope to capture the rawness and vulnerability of human experiences through nude figures. Working from and through personal experiences, these bodies become a channel for storytelling and a means to communicate themes of complicated relationships, human emotions and personal healing/introspection. I begin my work by allowing expressive washes of acrylic paint to take control of the surfaces I’m working on. The textures that result from this emphasize the emotions captured within each artwork. I then use charcoal powder as paint to sculpt knotted and overlapping human figures into the painting. This process of full control versus no control of medium adds to the emotional struggle within each work. The figures reflect the emotional and physical relationships we have with ourselves and others. The monochrome palettes serve to highlight the stark reality of the human condition by allowing for a greater focus on the intricate interplay between the figures, as well as light and shadow. This speaks to the simplicity and universality of human emotion. The paintings become more relatable, as emotional experiences transcend race, gender, and culture, ultimately connecting us. The washes of paint and powdered charcoal add depth and dimension, creating a subtle but impactful texture that contributes to the overall emotional resonance of each piece. The intention is to evoke a visceral response from viewers, encouraging them to reflect on their own experiences and the ways in which emotions can shape our bodies.
